Day 1 - Delhi

We left New York on Friday evening, straight from work to catch our red-eye flight number one, which got us into London at 8am on Saturday. In our last day in the West we spent the day walking around Notting Hill (where the water was out) and then lounging in our swank First class American Airlines lounge until our flight that evening. We were the only backpackers there, and the only ones catching a second red eye to Delhi that day.

We did however drink wonderful champagne.

We arrived in Delhi at 6am and got settled in the Master Guest House. After a nap, we met Jennifer--a professor from William & Mary whose friend's flight had been delayed. She joined us for the day to see some sights that our hotel recommended. The three of us shared the cost of a driver and air-conditioned taxi for the day (950 rupees = US$25). We saw the Gandhi museum which we found to be nothing more than a picture book of Gandhi, printed on poster board and hung up around the site where Gandhi was assassinated. To be fair, given that Gandhi didn't own anything in life (due to his beliefs) there wasn't much that could be seen. Then we went to Humayun's Tomb, one of the inspirations for the Taj Mahal (as most things in India are apparently).

Next, we went to get a quick lunch and then to FabIndia, a popular clothes store, to get Lauren's salwar kameez and Michael's kurta.

After getting properly clothed, we went to a local artisan's market (hot, not great) and then to Connaught Place, Delhi's upscale central shopping and eating area.

Finally, we got some drinks at the Imperial Hotel and returned to our hotel for a break from the heat.

After nap #2, we took a car out to Vasant Vihar for a _delicious_ dinner of lamb, paneer, naan, and beer at Punjabi By Nature (per Saurabh's recommendation).
